She had emailed me prior to attending to ask me if there was anything there that i might be interested in and sent me a link to the auction site that had shown some images of various items that were up for the latest auction. I indicated to her that I really liked this old trunk and that if it were not too expensive she could grab this for me. well, she did. . .25.00 What a steal. I use it to store some equipment and supplies and just love the aged look and detail intact.
This is a label on the top of the trunk from the Erie Railroad Company.

Awesome old trunk! We have an old steamer trunk that was my husband's grandmother's. It reminds me of this one. Very cool find!

I've been trying to figure out the approx. date of this trunk. there is a date on the erie Railroad company tag that reads 12-22-1... but the last three digits of the year are worn off. i would imagine it would be 1800 something . . .
Upon doing a bit of research I have found that this type trunk is called a "Cabin Trunk" because it was designed to slide under the bunk of your cabin while traveling by rail or sea.
Most likely late 1800's. Worth considerably more than what I paid and upwards of 500.00 if restored to good condition.
That IS a steal. It is fabulous and looks great as your coffee table. My folks have an old chest that looks that worn and worldly and it always fascinated me.
