Self Portrait, December 2009
I was testing some new equipment and since no one else was around I had a go at another self portrait. I was in no condition for a serious take so i decided to have a go at a sort of self mocking look. A whimsical shot, all in good fun.
I thought in the end it came off pretty neat.
the equipment I was testing were Cybersync transmitter and receivers that are used to remotely trip my Canon 580EXll Speedlites. This was shot with two speedlites, the main in a medium size softbox and the hairlight in a smaller softbox. The triggers worked flawlessly. Love them.

Gary... This is a whole new you from the debonair look in your avatar!! Seeing both pics on the same page does create a little cognitive dissonance! Love the little wink.
Brilliant!
Do more.
Start with you son.
I just paid a visit to the Getty recently to view the working class series of Irving Penn across New York, Paris, and London.
Just by the facial expressions can you tell where each are from. Can you image what you can do, who you can see into, in the small view of a studio..?!
Mister, you got a whole new gig.
Ha ha. I like!!!!
I'm not sure I'd want to be cornered at a party with you though ... kind of look eccentrically scary. :)
I also like your new Etsy widget ... cool!
Bonnie, thanks and as i have mentioned to you in our email I love the cognitive dissonance term here. It is something I'm looking to build upon, perhaps.
Teri, I'm thinkng about a series of portraits that bring to light another side of a subject. Not particularly good or bad but more like an alter ego that i think we all have but only bring out briefly in the privacy of our own.
Sharon, LOL. That is too funny. No, you would certainly not want to be cornered at a party with this guy.
Love the subject and I'm amazed with all the fine detail it shows.
Well, all the technical details fade in front of this portrait, I can't even concentrate of them. You're glorious !! I think Captain Jack Sparrow would be proud to have you in his crew, I'm sorry but I had to tell it, you made my day, he, he, he....
You had fun and attitude doing this, and it`s visible in the final result: technically without fault and artistically over the top.
A very very good self-portrait!
This is a winner! You are pretty darn cool, Gary. The neutral tones and textures are perfect. I want you to take my picture!!!
Great self portrait Gary, perfect expression.
You kind of look like a pirate a bit, don't you think?
Ha...I see you posted it over here too. I do love this one
Gary, I love your sense of humor you rapscallion! Kidding aside, the detail and lighting are fabulous and I love the neutral tones. You have a great talent in portraiture.
(whispering)whoa...
I beg to differ with Sharon, I would love to be "cornered" by this guy. You remind me a little of Captain Gregg from The Ghost & Mrs. Muir in this photo.
FABULOUS! I like it more than your profile pict, though both are very flattering! This one captures humor and that is always attractive when caught.
Love it .. love it .. love it!
the tones and textures are incredible. the background is so Rembrandt like and the pipe leaps off the page, oh, and you look great too!
Karen
brilliant portrait!
I like it. Looks a bit like Sherlock Holmes!
Love your blog by the way!

I'm just starting mine and any feedback is welcome! :)
Wow. You look awesome. Really awesome. Coming over to visit tonight via Merideth's the Things We Carried blog.
This photo of you is really fun and totally different from your clean cut, profile photo!:)
Is this your alter ego?
I also think you will have join the Jack Sparrow's, band of pirates.;)
It is a clear image and very good.
I wish I was more photogenic but I'm too shy...
Thanks for your visit and kind words about my work.
Happy holidays!
Each of your self portraits tell a story. I love your unique approach to self. Good luck!
Cheers!

Hey, it's a modern day Santa Claus! - I think Norman Rockwell did a painting of a Santa in a very similar pose : ) Your photography is gorgeous!

Hey - just stopped over to your blog after reading Willow. Personally, I'm with Christina.... handsome! As a lady pipe smoker, I'm always fascinated by men who smoke pipes.
I love the texture of the shirt materials.
Wow...
